Good Morning One And All, Who Is Evan Smoak ?
Good morning one and all, well, it’s morning here but it might be different wherever you are. I am currently sat at my desk and listening to an interview on YouTube, I do that quite a lot, there are not enough hours in the day to just sit and watch, I need to be doubling up.
Who am I listening to ? Great question. I have only just come across this guy and so far I like what he’s been putting out. Lewis Howes is his name and I believe he’s an ex-footballer (That’s the American version) and now has his own Podcast “The School of Greatness”
To give you an idea of the type of material he covers, my first introduction to him was when he interviewed Rhonda Byrne, of ‘The Secret’ fame, followed by Dr Joe Dispenza, I have only just recovered.
At the moment he’s talking with Bob Proctor and it’s about ‘mindset’ which is always a good thing to try to improve. Anyway, that’s not why I started to write this morning.
I had a bit of an epiphany the other day, quite possibly when I was penning my last post, In The Bleak Mid-Winter Or Noggings And Dwangs. It’s funny, I never like using the word ‘epiphany’, I always think that it has religious overtones and I am wary of upsetting anyone. The alternative is ‘aha’ which just looks wrong.
So, what was this great revelation I hear you cry ? I mentioned before that for the last couple of years I have been writing consistently on the Wealthy Affiliate platform, which has been a huge amount of fun but there are rules and regulations to follow when you publish your articles, understandably so.
One thing they are really ‘hot’ on is self-promotion and ‘spamming’ which is fair enough, they are trying to avoid the site turning into a huge advertising billboard. You have to be careful when it comes to using ‘links’ and after writing over 500 posts that is pretty much ingrained in my prose.

Shameless self-promotion. The other day I realised that I am no longer restricted, this is my blog and I can put as many or as few links in as I like. Whoop!!.
I still have to be careful, no one wants to read something that is jam-packed with adverts and promotions. That said, it does mean that I can recommend things that I like, have used, or like the look of, you know, like Biscoff. Yep, they could sponsor me.
This segues nicely into the next thing. I have recently finished reading a book (taken nearly a year) and have just picked up a new one, I say new but I started reading it over a year ago and for some reason got distracted, put it down and then promptly forgot about it.
A couple of things about books and these are things that I have contemplated from time to time. The first is, how do you find new authors ? I mean, we know what we like to read but at some point, we run out of material and will have to find a fresh source. How do we choose our next scribe ?
We have a Waterstones where I live and whenever I get the chance I’ll drop in and browse, one particular time I tapped up one of the assistants and told them who I read and asked for their recommendation on an author or two that I might enjoy. I’ll tell you what, she got it bang-on.
I bought the first of a series by both and have since mullered my way through half a dozen or more of their offerings.
Back to the title, who is Evan Smoak ? He’s the lead in a series of books, the third of which I am currently reading. I like to follow a character, as long as they’re interesting and see how they evolve over time. Anyway, the author is Gregg Hurwitz and the first in the series is called Orphan X, just click on the title and you can either go buy it or read a few pages. (See, I couldn’t do that before)
The second thunk, when it comes to books, is that when I look at ninety percent of the ones I have read, there’s an underlying theme, a similarity between all of them. There’s usually a ‘hero’ and he’s both brilliant, flawed and in most cases either a detective or a private investigator.
So, my question is, do we yearn to be these characters ? Is that what draws us in ? Not sure how long it took me to come to this conclusion but the more I think about it, the more I think it’s true. Don’t get me wrong, I love my life but if things were different, then I wouldn’t mind having a stab at doing what they do.
I’ve just thought of another one, is it the author or the character than you love the most ? You see, I have maybe ten ‘favourite’ authors but there’s only a couple them that I will read anything they produce, most of the time I stick with the one series of books that enticed me in the first place.
I can see the morning getting away from me and I’d like today to be an overly productive one so I am going to sign-off for now. This is two days in succession, as we said before, it’s not habit-forming just yet but it’s a step in the right direction
Enjoy your day.
